With the Seine River flowing through it, the Île-de-France region has its fair share of pretty little islands. Whether pedestrian, inhabited, accessible by bike or kayak, discover these unusual islets that make for charming strolls along the Seine.

It's said that in the Middle Ages, today's Paris region (which, according to France 3, is now part of southern Picardy) was called "Isle de France", because of the many rivers that flowed through it. Officially christened the "Île-de-France region" in 1976, when the regional administrative entity was created, the Paris area is far from being an island or a coastal region!

And yet, as you walk along the banks of the Seine, you'd almost think that the region's name came from the dozens of small, medium-sized and large islands that dot its shores, each with its own unique identity. TheÎle de la Cité and theÎle Saint-Louis - the two famous Parisian islands - are no longer so well known, but their suburban cousins are less well known, with the bucolic Île Fanac in Joinville-le-Pont (94), theÎle Saint-Denis (93) and its much more urban landscapes, theÎle de la Jatte, which inspired some of the great artists of the Belle Epoque... Green and picturesque, these islands are ideal for walking, cycling and even kayaking, and most of them are accessible with a Navigo pass. Here's our selection of the most beautiful, original and bucolic islands along the Seine, in Paris and the Ile-de-France region!
