There are plenty of idyllic boating spots in Greater Paris: from the Château de Fontainebleau and its bucolic Etang aux Carpes, to the Parc de Sceaux and its Grand Canal, or in the heart ofEssonne, in the department's largest public garden. Welcome to the Domaine de Chamarande, a beautiful 98-hectare green space where you can stroll, cycle or paddle.
A short hour's drive from Paris, or just as much by public transport - just take the RER C towards Étampes, it's direct and you get off at Chamarande - brings you to the eponymous Domaine, where you'll find a large château with a coral-colored facade. A country destination in the Essonne département, the Domaine is perfect for a day out in the fresh air, and is one of the Navigo pass-accessible outings we love to do in fine weather.
As you stroll along, follow the signs to "l'île " or, failing that, ask at the Info Point, where someone will be able to give you all the information you need (it's located in the courtyard of the château). After a few minutes' walk, a stream appears, then an island, two islands, and people rowing duck-green boats. At the little hut, all you have to do is ask to hire one of these boats, and off you go for 30 minutes (or more) rowing around the picturesque islands of the estate. You'll even pass under some small bridges, making for a particularly pleasant ride.
Boats are available for hire from June 1 to September 22, 2024 (closed on the weekends of August 24 and 25, August 31 and September 1), from 2pm to 6pm. A boat rental costs €5 (maximum 4 people per boat), and an adult must be present on board. Are you planning to discover the Domaine de Chamarande on board a boat soon?
