They fascinate as much as they frighten. Today, there are around 1,400 species of bats worldwide. Although they play an essential ecological role, they are still the victims of many prejudices. Today, according to the French Society for the Study and Protection of Mammals (SFEPM), virtually all bat species in Europe have seen their numbers decline.
That's why the SFEPM has been organizing the International Bat Night for over 20 years, between late August and early September. The aim? To enable as many people as possible to discover the biology and way of life of chiropterans, as well as the threats facing these incredible animals. During the event, the most curious will learn more about the animal through conferences, film screenings and even nocturnal outings to try to observe and listen to the animal, at night!
The Jardin des Plantes is taking part in this Nuit de la chauve-souris. From 7pm, meet the researchers who study them, watch a film and learn how to recognize and spot them. Another activity planned for that night is a guided night-time walk through the garden in search of bats, in small groups. Workshop stations will enable you to listen to their sounds! And if the weather's fine, you'll also have the chance toobserve the sky with astronomers.
Please note that these activities are free of charge, but must be booked in advance on 01 40 79 56 01 (from August 23 only). After that, you'll know all about bats! If you don't live in Paris, there are other events throughout the Île-de-France region where you can meet bats, in Arcueil, Colombes, Mériel or Gretz-Armainvilliers.Find out which one is closest to you!
