The Paris 2024 Olympic Games are giving artists free rein to express themselves in whatever medium they choose. After the sculptures in front of the Palais Bourbon, others are being installed on the Belvédère Claude-Gérard Marcus, at the top of the Quai de Jemmapes overlooking the Canal Saint Martin, accessible and visible to passers-by from March 21 to November 25, 2024, for the duration of the competition.
What makes them special? They're made of stained glass! Produced by La Phratrie, these"4 Cardinales du Sport", co-created by Gad Weil and Alexandra Castaing, aim to advocateequality in sport and society, while paying tribute to the contribution of women and people with disabilities. The sculptures are inspired by the 4 Parts of the World statue in the Jardin du Luxembourg, and represent four women from different backgrounds and sporting practices, each embodying a cardinal point.
Saheli, meaning "north" in Bambara, represents a runner of African origin, Minami, "south" in Japanese, a swimmer of Asian origin, Anatolí, "east" in Greek, a rugby player of Caucasian origin, and Kunti, "west" in Quechua, a field field hockey player of indigenous origin. They will thus witness the first games to feature perfect parity, 100 years after Alice Milliat imposed the presence of women in 1924.
