A short hour's drive from the capital - or better still, the same time by public transport (line P of the Transilien from Gare de l'Est) - brings you to the Briard region, a pretty area famous for the small village of Crécy-la-Chapelle.
Known by its pretty nickname of "Venise Briarde", the town of Crécy-la-Chapelle is the result of the merger of Crécy-en-Brie and La Chapelle-sur-Crécy (in 1972). A bucolic destination in the Île-de-France region, the village is a lovely place to stroll, with the banks of the Grand Morin river open to visitors, picturesque alleyways and the vegetation that enhances any stroll through the heart of the town. To discover the town's various points of interest, a free map (available from the tourist office) will take you around the town, or you can extend your stroll as far as the Moulin Jaune, still along the river.
What to do on a weekend in Crécy-la-Chapelle
If you want to find your way around easily, it's a good idea to pick up a map from the tourist office. Failing that, here are a few points of interest in the village: the Belfry, the house where the painter Corot lived,Saint-Georges church in the village, the banks of the Grand Morin (with the little bridges, on the walkers' mall), the Grande Prairie (rue Saint-Martin).
