As curfew has just been pulled forward to 6 p.m. in France in order to fight against the spread of Covid-19, Haute Autorité de Santé vaccine expert considers French cannot avoid a third lockdown. And yet, the professor warns against setting restrictions up too early.

Is another lockdown already inevitable in France? This is what confirms Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS) vaccine expert Jean-Daniel Lelièvre. This Monday January 18, 2021, invited on France Inter, the professor says that “another lockdown is not likely to be avoided” in France. The French health authorities are recording around 20,000 new cases per day.

Tweet reads: “According to Pr. Jean-Daniel Lelièvre, a new lockdown is inevitable: “Lockdown is undoubtedly interesting, and yet, it shall not be instated too early”.

Nevertheless, HAS expert admits instating lockdown cannot be rushed. “Lockdown is undoubtedly interesting, and yet, it shall not be instated too early” head of infectious disease unit at Henri-Mondor hospital says on the radio. Furthermore, this is not the only doubt brought forward by the professor. As for the impact of a likely new lockdown, nothing is set in stone. “And then, would it be regionwide or nationwide? Do we have to instate it all over the country? We shall see with epidemiologists as we go along” he says.

According to the expert, the genuine danger to anticipate remains the sudden outbreak of new variants across the world. “We did not expect to see these mutants as quickly” he explained to Léa Salamé. Furthermore, he warns against the risks the Winter holidays are. “One shall not make of the Winter holidays the occasion to increase the spread of the virus! Even though lockdown is postponed, one shall remain cautious and keep up with social distancing for the coming weeks” the professor insists on. One thing is sure: France is not done yet with the epidemic.
