For or against vaccine passport to travel across Europe? Here is one of the current controversial debates within the European Union. Europe is divided: on one hand, countries for a vaccine passport such as Greece, Austria, Hungary, Italy, Spain and more. On the other hand, France, Germany, the Netherlands prefer staying cautious.
Each side has their pro and con arguments as to the passport proving someone has been given two doses of Covid-19 vaccine, and they can then avoid lockdown measures and other travel restrictions.
Faced with this division, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on March 1 Europe is to fill a legislative proposal about this vaccine passport.
This Sunday March 14, invited on Europe 1's Grand Rendez-vous show, Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton has gone one further. The French CEO and politician has announced the EU authorities are willing to launch this health pass - also named - green pass - before the summer vacations.
Invited on Le Grand Jury show this Sunday March 28, the EU Commissioner entrusted with vaccines, Thierry Breton, told more about the upcoming "EU health pass", to be available from June 15, 2021.
In concrete words, this "EU health pass", not to be compulsory - Breton adds - will include several personal details including "your date of birth, pass number, certified with a QR code and if you've been vaccinated, the type of vaccine given, and if you have antibodies. For those not vaccinated nor sick, it will show your PCR test result", the EU Commissioner said.
"An airline will be able to ask it, and if you don't have it, you'll be asked to take a test", he added. The document - available on each EU country's health ministry's websites might be also asked to take part in a "major event" or enter a public place. Breton adds the health pass will be available digitally or on paper.
For the record, this pass aims at making traveling within the EU easier to people immunized against Covid-19.
