One of the capital's best-known and most popular museums, the Musée de l'Orangerie is home to numerous masterpieces by the great French Impressionist painters, including Monet's famous Water Lilies. It's a must-see for all art lovers: impossible to miss this artistic temple, set in the Tuileries Gardens, on the edge of the Place de la Concorde.
So when the opportunity arises to visit the Musée de l'Orangerie, don't hesitate: go for it! The museum opens its doors to all on September 21 and 22, for the 41st edition of the Journées du Patrimoine.
The aim of this annual event is to highlight the heritage treasures of each region, both well-known and hidden. Over the course of a weekend, all visitors are invited to take part in the tours, shows, entertainment and special events planned for this major cultural rendezvous.
During the European Heritage Days, the museum will be open to visitors at the usual rates.
Built in 1852, under the Second Empire, to house the orange trees decorating the gardens of the Tuileries Palace during the winter, the current Musée de l'Orangerie has undergone several campaigns of work to consolidate and transform the building. In 1921, it was assigned to the Under-Secretary of State for Fine Arts to exhibit living artists. Georges Clemenceau, then President of the French Council, proposed the installation of the Water Lilies, a masterpiece that heralded the twentieth century and which Claude Monet had given to the State at the end of the First World War to celebrate the armistice and peace. The "Claude Monet Museum" was inaugurated in 1927, a few months after the artist's death. In 1966, the State's decision to exhibit the Jean Walter and Paul Guillaume collection, acquired in 1959 and 1963, gave the "first museum of modern French art" accessible to the public its definitive appearance.
Don't forget to book your place in advance, to make sure you can enjoy this cultural weekend! And take a look at the program of other Paris museums.
