This year, the Domaine national de Saint-Cloud is taking part in the Journées du Patrimoine, on September 21 and 22, 2024. Located in the Hauts-de-Seine department, this magnificent green space hides an incredible history. Today managed by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux, France's leading cultural and tourist network, the Domaine National de Saint-Cloud extends over 460 hectares. While the estate has long been a resort for many princely, royal and imperial families, the history of the Domaine national de Saint-Cloud began in 1577, when Catherine de Médicis acquired a small estate in Saint-Cloud, the Hôtel d'Aulnay, as a gift for her equerry, Jérôme de Gondi.

What happened next? In 1658, Louis XIV bought the château for his brother, Philippe, Duke of Orléans, while the park was designed by the famous André le Nôtre, who decided to enlarge it. By this time, the estate had grown to almost 400 hectares. While the Palais became the summer residence of all sovereigns and one of the seats of executive power until the fall of Napoleon III, it was burnt down on October 13, 1870 during the Franco-Prussian war.

Today, the Domaine national de Saint-Cloud is visited by many people from the Ile-de-France looking for a bit of greenery not far from Paris. Classified as a historic monument, the park is the largest green space in the département. Every year, the site also hosts concerts and water games, not to mention the Rock en Seine festival.

Here is the program for the Journées du Patrimoine 2024 at the Domaine national de Saint-Cloud :

To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Paris, watch the epic story of the American soldier, Staff Sergeant Lawrence R Kelly, wounded on August 25, 1944, in his jeep as he drove down rue Dailly in Saint-Cloud. September 21 and 22

Free tour "Saint-Cloud from the pen of the Palatine"
From the terrace of the vanished château, through the groves of the Petit-Parc, to the belvedere at the top of Montretout hill, the tour invites visitors to discover the estate and its gardens through the eyes of the Princess Palatine, thanks to extracts from her correspondence dedicated to Saint-Cloud.
Monsieur's second wife wrote over 60,000 letters to her numerous correspondents throughout Europe. Only a tiny fraction of this witty chronicler of Louis XIV's court has survived. Anecdotes about her evenings at the château, or her encounters with the artists who worked there, will allow us to revisit this park "filled", in her words, with "alleys and great fountains with the most beautiful view in the world".
