The heatwave is taking hold in Paris at the beginning of September. In response to the extreme heat, the City of Paris has triggered level 3 of the heatwave alert plan, effective this September 8, 2023. We take stock of the situation.

Météo France has placed Paris and the whole of the Île-de-France region under orange heatwave alert: " The very hot weather that has settled over France this week will persist until the weekend ", says the institute. These weather conditions can "have an impact on the health of the most vulnerable people", it explains .

To combat this extreme heat, the City of Paris has decided to activate level 3 of the Heatwave Plan, this September 8, 2023. This entails new measures to warn Parisians of the harm that can be caused by this long-lasting heatwave. These measures include raising awareness in all healthcare establishments, particularly those catering for the elderly and people with disabilities. The City of Paris has alsoactivated the REFLEX system: vulnerable people registered on this file will be contacted by telephone to check on their condition and remind them of preventive measures to take in the heat.

To help Parisians cool off, the municipality has set up a number of spaces available to all. On the City of Paris website, you'll find a list of cool rooms in the various arrondissement town halls. Interactive maps also list drinking water fountains and the 1,300 "îlots de fraîcheur" in the capital. Gardens, municipal facilities, misters, fountains... You'll quickly find all the places where you can relax on those hot days.

These islands of coolness - parks, gardens and swimming pools - are also put to good use: several of them remain open until late evening, so that everyone can take advantage of these spaces better adapted to extreme temperatures.

To help the homeless, the City of Paris is planning to extend the opening hours of its reception centers, and to step up the number of "maraudes" to reach out to these vulnerable people. During these rounds, 5,000 gourdes should be distributed to the homeless. Lastly, three bath-shower establishments will be open to them until 8 p.m. on Saturdays: in Deux-Ponts (Paris Centre), Audubon (12th) and Petitot (19th).

Last but not least, Paris City Hall would like to remind you of the good habits to adopt during this period of heatwave:

  • Drink water regularly
  • Keep wet and ventilated
  • Eat enough food and avoid alcohol
  • Avoid physical exertion
  • Keep your home cool by closing the shutters during the day
  • Spend time in cool places (cinemas, museums, libraries, supermarkets, etc.).
  • Give and take news of your loved ones.
