After last year's reopening of the Pont au Double, which provides access to Notre-Dame Cathedral, the religious edifice will soon see a new milestone ticked off its list. Since its fire in 2019, work has been progressing steadily towards a hoped-for reopening at the end of 2024. According to the public institution in charge of its restoration, the famous spire will soon be back at the top of the monument, before Christmas!
An impressive scaffold, 100m high and weighing 600 tonnes, was erected to enable the reconstruction of the spire at the crossroads of the cathedral's transept. Sadly lost forever, Viollet-le-Duc 's spire has now been recreated, identical to its predecessor. The 16 statues, which can still be admired restored at the Cité de l'architecture et du patrimoine, and the cockerel, saved from the fire, will now take their place on the spire.
Since the spring of 2022, the companies working on the framework, nave roofing, choir, transept and spire have been busy ensuring that the various stages of the project can be completed with as little delay as possible. The solid oak framework of the spire will be completed in December, allowing the cathedral to regain its usual silhouette, 96m above the ground. The scaffolding will remain in place for a while longer, in preparation for the next stage, the assembly of the cathedral's nave and choir frames, to be completed in early 2024.
