After the fire that ravaged Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris in 2019, the renovation of one of the country's most visited monuments continues, with the return of the spire and rooster to its summit. During a site visit on December 8, 2023, the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, confirmed the creation of a museum entirely dedicated to the religious edifice, within theHôtel-Dieu, a building owned by the AP-HP that overlooks the cathedral's forecourt. Both a history and art museum, it will showcase the remains of the cathedral, as well as highlighting those who worked to rebuild it.
Although no date has yet been set for the opening, exhibitions about Notre-Dame have multiplied in recent months, both at the Louvre and at the Cité de l'architecture et du patrimoine, with great success. Particularly popular, the cathedral, its history and the work it has undergone are of great interest to French people and tourists alike, who should be delighted to see the edifice again at the end of 2024. On display will be relics from the fire and from excavations, as well as fragments of sculptures, including the ancient cockerel, and stained-glass windows by Viollet-le-Duc.
It's also an opportunity to showcase the exceptional trades, both at the time of its construction and today, that went into building and restoring such an important cathedral. This new exhibition space in the heart of the Île de la Cité will also allow visitors to delve intothe "religious, political, social and cultural history" of Notre-Dame de Paris, confirmed the Minister of Culture.
