" Paris was born, as we all know, on the old Île de la Cité, which is shaped like a cradle. The strike of this island was its first enclosure, the Seine its first moat ", wrote Victor Hugo in his novel Notre-Dame de Paris. In fact, the Parisian river has always been at the heart of the city, from prehistoric times to the present day.
A very special river, which has seen many people pass through it, and which has welcomed even more waste... The Seine hides a wealth of curious artefacts in its waters, all telling thestory of the city in their own way.
The archeological crypt of the Ile de la Cité, in the heart of Paris, offers us the chance to discover some of these objects, in an unusual and entertaining exhibition, to be visited from January 31, 2024 until the end of the year. Don't miss the exhibition Dans la Seine. Found objects from prehistory to the present day.
Nearly 150 objects are brought together in this historical tour. From the earliest human settlements to the 21st century, each find tells us more about the capital's inhabitants, their beliefs, their daily lives, but also their neighbors. We can admire objects from prehistoric times, relics left by theancient Romans, armies or religious offerings from the Middle Ages, pieces of architecture, garbage...
The chronological tour tells the story of the Seine, the developments that have been built and destroyed around the river, the populations that have settled on its banks, the landscape changes that have accompanied each period, the lifestyles of all these peoples...
The exhibition also provides an opportunity to learn more aboutarchaeology, the scientific methods used to date and identify these remains, and the technologies developed to present them to the public.
To complete the tour, contemporary works of art, charged with meaning, tell the story of today's Seine: ecological and heritage concerns are at the heart of the artists' work.
This exhibition is full of curiosities and surprises: don't miss it!
