Three years after the fire of the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral, renovation is coming along nicely and is incredible. Several projects were running for the refurbishment of the parvis and the surroundings of the landmark, and Bas Smets architecture enterprise was selected with densification of the vegetation to shine a light on the façade whilst creating a clearing.
In a few years, one will enjoy long tree-lined paths around the cathedral to face global warming. As a matter of fact, the clearing concept was designed to provide shadow to visitors on hot days likely to grow common. This new and fresh island will allow to increase the vegetized surface by 36%, without chopping down any tree. A technic system will also allow water to run on the parvis.
As for the back of the cathedral, a green square will be set between the radiating chapel and the Seine, allowing visitors to enjoy views on the renovated flying buttresses and stained-glass windows. The City of Paris – that unlocked 50 million euros for the project – guarantees the surroundings of the cathedral will be open from the second semester of 2024, at the same time as the end of the general renovations for the Olympics. But all together, the project will be delivered in 2027 definitively.
