The Ile-de-France transport network is being modernized with the forthcoming arrival of the Grand Paris Express, but also the deployment of new, more modern trains. This is particularly true of the RER NG.
The RER NG (for New Generation) embodies " the modernization effort and ambitious policy conducted by Île-de-France Mobilités to develop its network towards greater comfort, regularity and accessibility " explains Île-de-France Mobilités on its website.
With natural LED light for reading or working, 300 USB ports and air conditioning in summer, the RER NG should welcome its first passengers in the fall of 2023. But which RER lines will be affected by the progressive deployment of these new modern trains?
Only lines D and E will see the arrival of RER NG. In detail, the first night-time tests of these new generation trains have already begun on the E line of the RER. If everything goes according to plan, and subject to the approval of the relevant authorities, these new trains will be gradually introduced into commercial service on RER line E from October 2023.
On RER D, the schedule is different. While the first daytime tests without passengers are scheduled to begin in May 2023, the first RER NG trains are expected to start operating - with passengers on board - in the second quarter of 2024.
Eventually, Île-de-France Mobilités plans to deploy 255 RER NG trains to equip RER lines E and D (130 long 7-car trains for line D and 125 shorter trains for line E).
