Starting this Monday, November 18, 2024, the famous Butte Montmartre in Paris's 18th arrondissement will be undergoing redevelopment work as part of the "Embellir votre quartier" ("Beautify your neighborhood") scheme run by the City of Paris. Scheduled to run until August 31, 2025, this transformation is designed to make the area more pleasant for residents and visitors alike.

This Monday, November 18, the City of Paris launches the redevelopment of the Butte Montmartre. This emblematic site, popular with tourists and Parisians alike, will see its first construction site barriers installed. The work, which will last until August 31, 2025, is part of the " Embellir votre quartier " program, an ambitious project launched in 2021 by the City of Paris to rethink urban spaces for the benefit of quality of life. Montmartre, selected from the outset of this initiative, is now benefiting from a series of developments that mark a new stage in the neighborhood's metamorphosis.

The objectives are clear: increased vegetation, wider pedestrianization, the addition of bicycle lanes and the replacement of street furniture. Among the flagship measures is the definitive elimination of parking on the Butte, a decision that has sparked debate, but is in line with the desire to reduce the number of cars in favor of soft mobility. Other measures include the installation of new road signs, the creation of special parking areas for bicycles and the introduction of road markings.

During the works, the neighbourhood will undergo several temporary modifications:

  • Installation of barriers to secure roads under construction;
  • The occasional closure of certain streets to allow for road markings;
  • Pedestrian traffic will remain protected and have priority, while access for emergency vehicles will be guaranteed.

This redevelopment, which will be completed in summer 2025, aims to offer Montmartre's residents and visitors more convivial and aesthetically pleasing spaces, while respecting the area's historic identity. Since 2021, the "Embellir votre quartier" scheme has already transformed 42 Parisian neighborhoods, proving its effectiveness in condensing work over a limited period to minimize disruption to local residents.

With the elimination of parking spaces, Montmartre aims to take a further step towards more sustainable and harmonious urbanization, while making room for ecological alternatives such as bicycles and walking.

By redefining the Butte Montmartre, the City of Paris is pursuing its ambition to make its neighborhoods places where history, modernity and quality of life coexist harmoniously. A great opportunity for residents to discover their surroundings in a new, greener and calmer light.
