In response to climate change, the city of Paris is putting its heart and soul into greening the capital and making it a more pleasant place to live. The place of the car is also becoming less important, with more pedestrian spaces. After the urban forest at Place de la Catalogne, it's now the heart of the 14th arrondissement, Place Denfert-Rochereau, which will undergomajor work from the second half of 2025, in order to become greener.
Completely redeveloped, the square will see 130 trees and 30,000 plants planted, with its three squares linked and enlarged, a 4,500m2 extension to pedestrian spaces, 7,000m2 of planted areas, a new cycle path and a new bus lane. Close to the Catacombes and the Musée de la Libération, this square receives thousands of visitors every year, and welcomes them with its famous lion of Belfort, a sculpture by Auguste Bartholdi.
The work, planned since 2021, should be completed in 2026, creating a green promenade around the lion, which until now has been surrounded only by cars, who will now have to drive around the immense green space. Considered to be very accident-prone, this crossroads intends to regain its serenity and become a"park square", as evoked by Mayor Carine Petit.
