The news has just broken, following the publication of a new decree dated January 24, 2025: key boxes, widely used in the furnished tourist accommodation sector, are now banned in public spaces in Paris.

Still with the aim of regulating illegal tourist rentals in the capital, the Mayor of Paris has taken a new decision, made official following a decree dated January 24, 2025. This concerns key boxes, i.e. secure boxes where tourist rental entrance keys are usually left, in order to facilitate their return.

This ban follows the proliferation of these little boxes, which are regularly found on Paris public property. After lowering the number of days per year for which it will be possible to rent a furnished tourist accommodation to 90 (down from 120), the city is continuing its fight against these rentals, which are becoming increasingly common in the capital.

In the event of non-compliance, a sticker requiring removal of the box within 15 days will be affixed. Once this period has elapsed (without any action on the part of the owner), the item will be removed and destroyed by the City of Paris. In exceptional cases, an extension of 8 days may be granted at the request of the owner of the key box (in this case, please send your request by email to dpmp-em-pdpgv@paris.fr). Any infringement will be punishable by a fine of up to €1,500 and €3,000 (in the event of a repeat offence), again according to the City of Paris.
