We've been waiting for it! After the huge disappointment of the fourth installment, Indiana Jones 5 aroused both fear and excitement. Discovered out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival, it is now being broadcast on television for the first time. To rediscover Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, tune in to Canal+ this Monday, January 1 at 9.10pm.
The long-awaited return of cinema's greatest archaeologist! His last adventure dates back to 2008, and the idea of a fifth installment has been in the pipeline for a number of years. This time around, Steven Spielberg leaves his place behind the camera to James Mangold, and as if to show that he deserves this very honorary position, the filmmaker behind Logan and Le Mans 66 pulls out all the stops right from the introduction! In a sequence lasting almost 25 minutes, the director gives us a real lesson in directing, and a technical demo that turns into an aesthetic slap in the face.
Pace is the key word in this fifth opus. Phoebe Waller-Bridge(Fleabag) has left her mark on the screenplay, as well as playing the beautiful role of Indiana Jones' goddaughter. Indiana Jones is now an old man, on the verge of retirement, when this young woman comes to fetch him for one last adventure, in search of the Dial of Destiny, a mysterious artifact created by Archimedes 2300 years ago.
Amusingly, for the first time, the archaeologist (who has lost none of his superb panache) is not the driving force behind the action. He's taken in by Helena, the intrepid young woman who recalls the Indy of his younger days. She's the next generation, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge impresses in such a physical role. We've never seen her like this, but the action suits her perfectly.
There's a lot to be said for this new installment, which respects the specifications without giving the impression of déjà-vu. James Mangold brings in enough new blood to give the impression of genuine renewal, and that's good! The film has its share of pleasant surprises, and even if it's a little too long, we're not going to sulk. Especially when Mads Mikkelsen is on board, playing such a tasty villain. As usual, the Dane is a charismatic monster, even when he's playing a Nazi mad scientist.
In the meantime, check out our interview withEthann Isidore, one of the film's stars. At just 16 years of age, the young Frenchman makes his mark on the trio of main heroes, and will help Indy on the last adventure of his life.
