Want to travel into space without leaving the capital? Head for The Edge, a virtual reality center that's just moved into the 3rd arrondissement, to discover its very first one-of-a-kind VR experience, Ganymede. An experience for two to four players (or even more), immersing you in an abandoned space base. Available from September 6, 2023.
The pitch is quite clear:"Your mission is simple: to save humanity from as yet unidentified threats... Collaboration, observation and reactivity will be your assets to succeed in this mission on the Ganymede space base". A slightly different experience from what the capital's virtual reality centers usually offer... And with good reason, The Edge is first and foremost offering its own creation. In all, two years of work have gone into this completely new adventure.
Secondly, the experience differs in its immersion, with players donning a haptic vest that vibrates according to the actions they perform, as well as sensor-equipped joysticks that let you grab objects in virtual reality as you would in real life, by opening your fingers and grasping the objects. The aim is to offer you a different kind of virtual reality. On the headset and controller side, it's the Valve Index. Otherwise, the player is positioned on a vibrating station, and feels the effects of heat and wind thanks to radiators and fans. The brand also offers the possibility of privatizing the space (the brand includes 14 game booths) for team building, birthdays, EVGs or EVJFs.
An experience that the editorial team was able to test at the brand's new premises. It's a real departure from the usual Parisian VR centers, offering a slightly different, more immersive approach to virtual reality. The effects of heat, vibration and ventilation have a lot to do with this. A more faithful rendering, too, in terms of handling, thanks to the Valve Index controllers. Graphically speaking, the experience is beautiful and very comfortable to play.
The experience lasts around 45 minutes, depending on your experience of virtual reality, and is suitable for all groups. But the aim here is not to challenge yourself or break your head over riddles... Here, it's all about experiencing VR at its most beautiful and gripping, through the joysticks and capabilities of the headset. A little contemplation too... It should also be noted that several endings are possible, depending on the progress of each group, to avoid frustration, and that the difficulty level adapts according to the number of players.
And as a bonus, a preshow with screen and a few surprises, explaining how to equip yourself. It's pretty and well done, and adds an extra layer of immersion. Note also that the experience is accessible to families, as the company's founders have taken particular care to ensure that everyone can play and have fun. In short, Ganymede is a great virtual reality experience, whether you're a novice or a complete expert. An experience that stands out from the crowd, even, for the precision of its gameplay and its particularly successful immersion. All that's left is to take the plunge... Shall we book a session, folks?
