Gamers who love horror movies, here's a game that should interest you... The Quarry, published by 2K Games and imagined by the creators ofUntil Dawn, plunges you into a "teen horror", somewhere between a slasher film and a monster movie, in which every choice counts. And that's what makes this game so special: a tailor-made experience in which your choices have consequences for the rest of your adventures.
A total of 186 possible endings have been devised, depending on the choices you make. An experience designed to be seen like in the movies, too... And with good reason: several game modes are offered, from the most active with the choices you have to make, to the most passive with "Cinema Mode", which lets you enjoy the game like a breathless cinematic thriller, to bingewatch without any interaction on your part. The choice is yours...
It's a true cinematic experience, too, thanks to state-of-the-art motion capture, cinema-inspired lighting techniques and Hollywood-style acting. As for the pitch, here it is:"As the sun sets on the last day of their summer camp, the counselors at Hackett's Quarry decide to throw a party. No kids. No adults. No rules. But things quickly go wrong," explains 2K Games.
He continues:"Stalked by individuals covered in blood and something even more sinister, the teenagers are in for an unexpected nightmare. Jokes and flirtations give way to life-or-death decisions, and bonds are strengthened or broken under the pressure of unbearable decisions".
Note that, as 2K explains, the"Return Before Death System" is only available to players who have completed the game at least once or who have purchased theDeluxe Edition. Supermassive Games, which developed the game, is working on an update that will provide players with clear information on when they will ascend in the story when using the"Return Before Death System" - with updated general warnings.
Our Review:
A game we were able to test. And although at first glance it didn't appeal to us (we're not really into horror games), we quickly got hooked on The Quarry, thanks to its particularly well-written story and heartfelt dialogues. Graphically speaking, the software is simply magnificent (we played on PS5). The lighting is particularly well brought out, and the acting by actors from the film and TV worlds adds real value.
In terms of gameplay, fans ofUntil Dawn shouldn't feel out of place, since, like the 2015 release, The Quarry uses the same codes, i.e. an interactive game focusing more on the scenario, with beautiful cinematics interspersed with movement phases and QTEs. A gameplay to which you'll need to pay close attention, as the scenes follow one another rapidly, despite the long cinematic sequences. And although The Quarry features more cinematics than in-game action, the different phases are fairly well balanced, with the QTE phases revitalizing everything every time.
As for the "Cinema" mode, this consists of the game's various cutscenes, which, glued together, make for a good slasher movie in the purest tradition of the 90s. This modular mode lets you play the game in its classic version, or take it from start to finish. You can even choose whether all the protagonists survive their night of terror or die in excruciating agony.
In short, The Quarry is a beautiful game that we really enjoyed discovering. A true declaration of love to the cinema genre, making it one of the summer's must-have hits for all horror film fans. All you have to do now is get your hands on it.
