You'll have to do a bit of math in Hogwarts Legacy! If you're new to the game, you'll no doubt have noticed, during your first few minutes at Hogwarts (or at least just after your spell class), some rather bizarre doors, surrounded by 10 animal heads and featuring numbers and the same symbols in circles at the heart of a triangle... These are simply arithmetic doors, to be unlocked to discover their contents (mainly chests).
But before we go any further, what isarithmancy? For those in the know about the Harry Potter saga (or at least those who've read the books), arithmancy is one of the subjects taught at the wizarding school, to be chosen as an option from third year onwards, along with divination or courses in caring for magical creatures. In fact, it's one of the many subjects Hermione studies in her extensive timetable, requiring a Time-Turner to attend class. In simple terms, it's a divination technique based on numbers.
Back to the point... or rather, the numbers: how do you unlock these doors in Hogwarts Legacy? Not going to lie, it took us a while to figure out how it worked, and if you don't want to get too hung up on it, here's how to solve these puzzles. And you'll have to do a bit of math to do it. First of all, note the fantastic animal heads surrounding the door. Start with the bottom left (Demiguise's head), and work your way up to the last head on the other side, bottom right. This gives, from left to right, the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9, as below.
Next, the door. The first circle at the top has a question mark and two numbers on the outside, and a number in a triangle inside the circle. This is simply an equation: the number in the triangle is the result of an addition, the numbers and symbols on the outside are the components of that addition, and the question mark is the missing number in that addition. For example, in the puzzle at the top of the door, 5 is the result of the addition, and 3 and 0 are the digits needed to obtain the result. We're missing the question mark... This gives 3 + 0 + ? = 5.
To find the missing number, simply subtract the two components of the addition from the result, i.e. 5 - 3. The result is 2, which must then be transcribed onto the nearby "? " symbol (note that you may have to search a little), matching the number found with the correct symbol above the door, i.e. the third from the bottom, on the left (Grapecorne's head).
For the ?? symbol, same thing, except that for the addition, you'll have to replace the symbol (the unicorn head) with the correct number, then subtract. This gives "Unicorn Head" + 4 + ?? = 12, or 1 + 4 + ?? = 12. 4+1 = 5, from which we subtract 12, giving 7. Now it's up to you to search the symbols around the door for the one that corresponds to the number 7 (in this case, the jellyfish), and then select the right symbol in the space nearby. Once you've entered both symbols, if you're right, the door should open.
