Power Rangers fans, mark your calendars! Jason, Zack, Trini, Billy and Kimberly make their grand return in a new adventure by Digital Eclipse, entitled Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind, and available from December 10, 2024. Initially announced for PC only, this retro beat'em up will also be available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series and Nintendo Switch. The Switch version, on the other hand, will be released a few days later, on December 19. The game takes you back in time to face the iconic Rita Repulsa!
Several weeks ago, Digital Eclipse surprised the gamer community by announcing the release of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind. However, details concerning console platforms remained unclear. Today, a discreet update on the publisher's website reveals that the game will be available on several consoles, including the Nintendo Switch eShop. Although specific links to other versions are not yet active, this information is enough to delight fans of retro games on Switch.
Digital Eclipse, the studio behind the videogame restorations of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection and Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection, brings you an adventure in which the Power Rangers face a temporal threat. In this new opus, Robo-Rita, a robotic version of Rita Repulsa, joins forces with her alter ego from the past to rewrite history and prevent the formation of the Power Rangers. Players must join forces to thwart this threat and save the space-time continuum.
The game offers cooperative combat for up to five players, locally or online, with shooting and chase phases reminiscent of the 90s. Fans of the original Rangers and their famous Dinozords(Jason, Zack, Trini, Billy and Kimberly) are back, as are levels inspired by several cult episodes in the series.
Our review of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Rita's Rewind :
Here's a game that surfs on the nostalgia of the 90s... Mighty Morphin Power Rangers appeals to us in many ways, not only because of its nostalgic feel, but also and above all because of the way it plays on nostalgia, starting with its graphics. The game is a 2D beat'em up, pixelated like a cathode ray tube, bringing back the best moments of the various Power Rangers games available on the Megadrive and other consoles of the time. We like the idea.
In terms of gameplay, the game also rides this wave of nostalgia, with handling similar to the Power Rangers beat'em ups of the time, even going so far as to reproduce certain moves or staging identically ( Putty Patrollers and Tenga Warriors falling after a series of moves...). The gameplay is relatively simple (move, strike), but becomes more complex when it comes to controlling the Zords, then the Megazord, thus diversifying the gameplay. This is good, although control of the Megazord could be simplified.
Note that each character has his own characteristics and special attack, as does his Zord, which you won't be able to control in the same way depending on the Ranger you choose: choosing Zack, Billy or Trini (Black, Blue and Yellow Rangers), for example, will give you access to a terrestrial Zord, moving only on the ground, while choosing Kimberly (Pink Ranger) will give you access to her Zord, the Pterodactyl, flying through the air. Different approaches, but the same mission: to avoid obstacles and destroy surrounding enemies.
We also appreciate the possibility of changing Ranger at any time (at the start of each level), but also in the game's "lobby", i.e. at the Angel Groove Youth Center (and the juice bar run by Ernie). It's a game we loved discovering, reminding us of the hours we spent on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie. And we're still enjoying it! A must for the curious!
