For several years, they’ve been a true legend for lots of British people lacking a new musical genre. They are The Specials!
Created in 1977, the band was first called The Automatics then The Coventry Automatics before ultimately being The Special AKA.
In 1979, Jerry Dammers decided to create his own label: Two-Tone Records. The first single, “Gangster” is released with the label and hit the top 10 best sales for 1979.
With this success, the British band starts getting an image: they assume a new musical genre, the whole rocked with “two tones” outfits.
In the early 80’s, The Specials win all votes with singles often hitting the top charts. Despite all this, Staples, Golding and Hall leave the band. It’s the beginning of the end for Two-Tone Records. After the arrival of a new member and the publication of a new opus, “In the studio” in 1984, the band doesn’t get well and Dammers splits up the band…
Despite the split, some members of the band got back together several times for tours. In 2011 actually, The Specials stopped by Paris Olympia as part of a European tour.
After the terrible loss of drummer and founding member John Bradbury in December 2015, the band has decided to keep fill arenas and inspire life-long and new fans. In 2019, The Specials will get back on stage. In Paris, they’ll stop by La Cigale this Monday April 8, 2019 for one night likely to be sold-out in no time. Don’t forget tickets go on sale this November 2, 2018 at 10 a.m.
Since their scrap, The Specials have performed in over 200 venues across the world including: Coachella / Live on the Letterman Show (United States), Summersonic / Fiji Rocks (Japan), Benicassim (Spain), Lollapalooza Festival (Chile), Montreal Jazz Festival (Canada), Bluefest Byron Bay (Australia) as well as in many world events.
