While in Russia, the bicentenary of Marius Petipa 's birth is being celebrated with great pomp and circumstance with an exhibition at the Bakhrushin Museum in Moscow and the National Museum of Theatre and Music in St. Petersburg, the National Dance Center is also shedding light on the career of the ballet master and choreographer of the Imperial Ballet of St. Petersburg.
His work includes ballets as popular today as La Bayadère, Paquita, Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker and Swan Lake. These great ballets have been popularized thanks to the arrival in Western Europe of the dancer Rudolf Nureyev, who will not cease, throughout his career, to propose on our stages variations of Petipa.
At the Centre National de la Danse in Pantin, the exhibition Marius Petipa, étoilement d'une œuvre (Marius Petipa: The Star of a Work ) offers visitors the opportunity to discover a hundred or so documents from the CN D's collections and from ten of its heritage holdings (in particular the Zereteli, Volkova-Dabbadie, Nureyev, and Vaillat holdings), showing scores, postcards, gala programs, stamps, stickers, photographic albums, illustration plates, lithographs, and choreographer's drawings, etc. A journey to the heart of a career whose influence and importance still resonate today, on every ballet stage in the world.
