The genius and poetry of William Shakespeare are revealed in this immersive show adapted from the play Measure for Measure. From August 16 to September 7, 2024, Léonard Matton presents Fléau, an innovative and intriguing show that challenges the codes of classical theater. In a modern staging, intrigue and drama are woven together and unraveled, revealing human nature at its most beautiful... And the darkest.
" In the midst of a plague epidemic, the Duke of Vienna announces that he is leaving the city and entrusting the reins to his young and very virtuous minister, Angelo. In reality, the Duke remains, disguised as a priest, to observe incognito what happens when the law punishes the slightest misdemeanor. Claudio, who has impregnated Juliet out of wedlock, is arrested. He asks his sister and future nun, Isabelle, to intercede on his behalf with Angelo. The virtuous minister receives her and falls brutally in love with her, so much so that he confronts her with a dilemma: give up her virginity to avoid a man's death, or let her brother die? "
This play is performed outdoors at the Domaine du Palais Royal. Several spaces are carved out of the courtyard: the space of power and law is set up near the Constitutional Council, the space of debauchery under the Valois Gallery, while the space of religion is under the colonnade near the Comédie Française. In this way, the public can only see part of the story, depending on where they sit. As a result, mysteries multiply for the spectators: who to believe, who to support, who to judge when we don't know all the elements of the case?
This musical show combines the rhythms and tunes of the Renaissance with electronic and acoustic music. Thalie Amossé & Laurent Labruyère created the music, while Jean-Baptiste Barbier-Arribe choreographed the piece. Seventeen actors bring this story to life:
The power of law, justice and equity, equality between men and women: centuries later, Shakespeare's words and stories still resonate in modern society. This summer, don't miss Fléau, a show as unusual and compelling in its subject as it is in its staging, at the Domaine du Palais-Royal .
