What if we were to see Barbie in all her guises and through dozens of photos? That's what the Musée des Arts Décoratifs is proposing in this beautiful exhibition.
As Fashion Week unfolds in Paris, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs is showcasing the different lives of Barbie, perhaps the most fulfilled woman in the world, with the 150 jobs she's had in 50 years and the dream dressing room she's created for herself.
More than just showcasing beautiful outfits, this exhibition looks back at an entire era for Mattel. Since January 28, 2016, Barbie is no longer Barbara Millicient Roberts, that woman from Winconsin, the collective fantasy of a woman with blue eyes, blond hair and a slender, slender figure. Yes, on January 28, 2016 Barbie became more than a woman, a standard-bearer of femininity. And as there are as many femininities as there are women, Barbie is now conceived in four silhouettes, seven complexions, over 20 eye and hair colors.
In the design and fashion collections, over 700 dressed dolls are presented in a scenography highlighting stylistic and societal evolutions in the US since 1959: from the first Barbie in a swimsuit in 1959 to the fashion victim doll of 2015, via the astronaut Barbie of 1965 (4 years before the first step on the Moon), the surgeon Barbie of 1973, not forgetting the presidential candidate Barbie of 2000, over 55 years of American fashion and culture are presented.
For the little ones, this exhibition is an opportunity to see over 700 Barbie outfits, including exclusive creations by Thierry Mugler, Christian Lacroix, Jean Paul Gaultier, Agnès B, Cacharel and Christian Louboutin for Mattel and its Barbie. For our part, in addition to fantasizing about her outfits, we can judge and/or applaud the changes made over the years to this doll, often considered sexist and criticized for not respecting women's morphology and creating complexes in little girls.
Let's discover the Barbie epic!
