From February 21 to May 7, 2018, the Centre Pompidou presents an exhibition focusing on the work of photographer David Goldblatt. A retrospective focusing on his commitment and the retranscription of a skin-deep social and political conscience. The exhibition features several major series from the photographer's archives, as well as from French collections and a deposit at the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg.
From his lesser-known early photos of Cape Town's docks, through the "Particulars" series, to the "In the Mines" series presented in its entirety, the Centre Pompidou presents a wide-ranging retrospective touching on all the artist's sensibilities. Visitors can even discover his most recent work: the "Intersections" series.
The South African-born photographer started out in 1960. His first series, "In the Mines" and "Afrikaners", have now become must-haves for those who love David Goldblatt's work, particularly documentary photography. In them, the artist reveals " with acuity the complexity of social relations under Apartheid ". A " singular tension between subject, territory, politics and representation " that the exhibition aims to show.
