After 15 years in existence, the Fondation Giacometti has opened an exhibition space in Paris to showcase the work ofAlberto Giacometti. This Paris-based foundation has brought together and restored over 300 sculptures, 90 paintings and thousands of works on paper, as well as a remarkable collection of archives and photographs preserved by his widow, Annette Giacometti.
Open by appointment, theInstitut Giacometti places Giacometti's works in an exceptional reconstruction of his studio at 46, rue Hippolyte-Maindron(14th arrondissement), just a few blocks from the Institut.
Why Montparnasse? The Swiss artist fell in love with Paris, having come to Paris forAntoine Bourdelle's studio. At the age of 22, he discovered African art and Greek statuary, and began making plaster sculptures. His identity was obvious.
A few blocks from 46, rue Hippolyte-Maindron(14th arrondissement), where he lived from the age of 25 until his death, the Giacometti Foundation acquired a 350 m² Art Deco building and commissioned Pascal Grasso to refurbish it while preserving its historic decor.
Pascal Grasso 's solution? "White partitions, picture rails, pedestals and lighting fixtures stand out from the historic decor and appear to float. The shape of the suspended lights is inspired by the geometry of the historic ceilings that house them, to create new contemporary chandeliers that continue the historical stratification of the site".
In addition to the Foundation's collections, theInstitut Giacometti offers ambitious temporary exhibitions devoted to particular aspects of Giacometti's work, as well as to his relationships with the artists of his time.
