The Musée d'Orsay seen through new eyes... That's what American painter Julian Schnabel is proposing for an exhibition in the cultural establishment from October 10, 2018 to January 13, 2019. The artist is invited to propose his own vision and reading of the museum's collections in two historic rooms of the former Parisian railway station, to which he adds his own works, for an artistic dialogue between past and present.
For this exhibition, the artist's first in a Parisian institution since his stint at the Centre Pompidou some thirty years ago, Julian Schnabel has chosen from the museum's collection " works that have never been shown together ": Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, Manet, Cézanne... So many artists that the American painter highlights alongside his own canvases, underlining " the properties of painting, contradicting the common twentieth-century notion of an 'end of painting' ".
The exhibition was also designed by Julian Schnabel, in collaboration with Louise Kugelberg. The idea behind the exhibition? "To see in the works of the 19th century and today more than just images, existential experiences in which the human body, scale and the emotions of art are given new life ".
The exhibition also includes a portrait ofAzzedine Alaïa, painted by the artist. A special tribute, since Azzedine Alaïa was a friend of both the American painter and the Musée d'Orsay. It's also an opportunity to discover an artist who continues to sublimate painting, just as the great names of the 19th century did.
