One of the world's finest collections of African art... The Musée du Quai Branly has been devoting an exhibition to part of the collection ofHelena Rubinstein, woman of the world and creator of a cosmetics empire, since November 19, 2019. Although the exhibition was due to end on June 28, 2020, it has been extended until September 27, 2020.
Following the coronavirus epidemic, the museum has announced measures to limit the number of visitors, the direction of the visit and the compulsory wearing of masks for children aged 11 and over.
Having become wealthy thanks to a moisturizing cream, Helena Rubinstein quickly developed an interest in the arts, even though she knew little about them. This was particularly true of the primitive arts and painting of theEcole de Paris, which she chose to furnish her apartments in New York, London and Paris.Throughouther life, Helena Rubinstein surrounded herself with artists such as Colette, Picasso, Cocteau, Man Ray and Chagall, not forgetting the favorites she brought back from her travels around the world.
As the Musée des arts et civilisations d'Afrique, d'Asie, d'Océanie et des Amériques , the Musée du Quai Branly offers a focus on Helena Rubinstein 's interest inAfrican art, the negro art that caught her attention from the very first years of its commercial success in Europe. Through nearly 60 pieces from her collection, this exhibition presents the artistic tastes of a woman who was interested in what others considered ugly, and affirmed that in addition to the classical or even neo-classical aesthetics permeating the West, the notions of character, strength and expressive intensity of other world cultures were just as important.
A very fine collection, beautifully illuminated, giving an insight into part of the collector's life and her pronounced taste for African art. In short, don't hesitate to visit the Musée du Quai Branly to discover the life of this woman of the world and her unique collection, one of the best-known in the art world today. Shall we go, friends?
Please note that it's been over 4 years since our last visit, so the place and experience may have changed.
