The Musée d'Orsay is spotlighting Léon Spilliaert in a retrospective entitled Lumière et solitude, to be visited from October 13, 2020 to January 10, 2021. This exhibition is centered around four major paintings from the Musée d'Orsay collections and 90 works from Belgian and American museums. Join Léon Spilliaert on his inner journey and discover a unique universe. The exhibition remains closed until further notice.
The works on show represent only part of the painter's career: this selection focuses on the artist's favorite themes. Léon Spilliaert plays with shadows and black to bring out figures, silhouettes of his town, Ostend, and lonely, lost faces.
His art oscillates between symbolism, expressionism and minimalism. The artist remains free of artistic rules and experiments: theexhibition shows drawings inIndian ink as well as charcoal, pastels, watercolors, gouache, chalk... This diversity of techniques highlights all the nuances of his subjects, which he explores to the point of obsession.
A strange fascination draws us to these paintings. We feel a kind of melancholy before the deserted landscapes, a sense of calm before the soft, gradated colors. We'd love to stroll along these infinite expanses that the painter depicts, again and again, with ever greater talent.
Plunge into the dark recesses of the artist's unconscious and let his light emerge little by little, from painting to drawing. A fascinating inner journey to discover a singular artist. Don't forget to visit the Musée d'Orsay 's permanent collections and take advantage of the temporary exhibitions still on show, such as the James Tissot retrospective or theAubrey Beardsley exhibition.
Please note that it's been over 4 years since our last visit, so the place and experience may have changed.
