How did men and women live in the Middle Ages? This is the question that the Musée de Cluny - musée national du Moyen-Âge is posing to visitors and the curious with its latest exhibition, Regards sur la vie quotidienne, which runs from July 1 to September 27, 2020. The exhibition comes to the museum just before it closes for the final session of works before its full reopening in May 2021.
Through a selection of works from the museum's collections, history buffs are invited to discover the"glimpses of everyday life" that the institution's curators bring to these historic pieces of everyday life. These objects are presented "alongside the "Treasures " presentation, which showcases works of great prestige and subtle refinement".
What do these exhibits tell us? That"everyday needs" have not changed from the Middle Ages to the present day. Lodging, sleeping, taking care of oneself, eating,"nourishing one's spirit and spirituality, measuring time, distances or quantities"... Needs and other human conceptualizations that everyone has had or still has, whatever the era. And an exhibition that aims to shatter preconceived ideas on various points, such as cleanliness, by showing"all the attention paid to toiletry and adornment", or learning,"in the form of imitation games or scholarly works".
In all, almost 200 everyday objects are on display, some of them exceptionally removed from the museum's storerooms, to shed "a new light" on the museum's collections. Pewter spoons, goblets passed from hand to hand, Hispano-Moorish tableware... So many testimonies to daily life"whose preciousness varies according to the social category for which they were intended". Why don't we take a look at the lives of our ancestors, folks?
Please note that it's been over 4 years since our last visit, so the place and experience may have changed.
