This spring, the Château de Versailles invites us to discover its private collections: in Madame de Maintenon's apartments, admire the drawings purchased by the château between 2000 and 2020. The exhibition Dessins pour Versailles, vingt ans d'acquisitions (Drawings for Versailles, twenty years of acquisitions ) opens on June 1, and holds many surprises in store until October 3, 2021.
Louis XIV as a Roman emperor? A portrait by Charles Perrault, sketches of the palace, caricatures, unofficial portraits of members of the Court? All these treasures and more are on display in the corridors of the Château de Versailles.
The palace has decided to reveal a little-known part of its archives: the drawings in the collection of the Cabinet des Arts graphiques at the Château de Versailles. We won't be able to see all 30,000 works (some drawings are too fragile to be displayed), but we will be able to admire enough to satisfy our curiosity and thirst for beautiful things.
Gouache, pastel, pencil, red chalk, three pencils, pen and watercolour - there are many different techniques and styles on display, and with good reason: the Graphic Arts collection spans more than four centuries of graphic creation. Side by side, works by Charles Le Brun, Charles de la Fosse, François Lemoyne, Richard Mique, Jacques Gondoin and Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer can be admired.
Discover Versailles, its different stages of construction, its architectural changes and, above all, its inhabitants as you've never seen them before.
And don't miss the major exhibition dedicated to Hyacinthe Rigaud, the Sun King's painter. Shall we go?
