Muse and symbol of a dazzling impressionist era, Julie Manet is given pride of place in an exhibition in Musée Marmottan Monet. From October 19, 2021 to March 20, 2022, discover “Julie Manet”, a fascination exhibition about a multi-faceted woman.

Daughter, wife, model, muse, patron… You may have seen her face dozens of times in many museums: Julie Manet is at the very heart of the impressionist world. This is why the Musée Marmottan Monet dedicates her an exhibition running from October 19, 2021 to March 20, 2022. “Julie Manet” is the name of this never-before-seen retrospective gathering many masterpieces.

Over a hundred paintings, sculptures, pastels, watercolors, and engravings tell about the life of the woman who lived close to the impressionist circles. The museum first takes us to live the young days of this woman when she poses for her mother, Berthe Morisot, and her uncle, Edouard Manet. Friends of this couple of artists also use her as a model: she is the little girl, and then the young lady in Renoir’s paintings.

All her life, Julie Manet has bathed in art since she marries painter Ernest Rouart who never stopped painting his wife’s beauty. All along her life and meetings, she gathered a huge collection of impressionist paintings. Monet, Poussin, Fragonard, Hubert Robert, Delacroix, Corot, Jongkind, Daumier, Puvis de Chavannes, Degas… Julie Manet and her husband buy and give to museums many works of art now part of the greatest treasures in the history of art.

Committed woman, she fought to make her mother’s and uncle’s work acknowledged to see them displayed in the most beautiful museums. But Julie Manet only lived in the shadow of these extraordinary painters. She is famous for her painting and journal, highlighted in the exhibition.

Discover, in an exceptional fashion, several editions of Julie Manet’s journal, written between 1893 and 1899, and published in 1979. The museum also displays an original typescript and a never-before-seen manuscript by Jeannie Gobillard. Friend of Julie’s, Jeannie tells – through 120 pages – the origin of the engagement to the double marriage shared by Julie and Ernest and Jeannie and Paul Valéry. Discover everything Julie Manet never wrote: M. Degas’ declarations, visiting the Passy cemetery, and the part of Impressionists in the future of their lives as women.

Here and there, the exhibition also displays original photographs, giving more essence to this woman often painted.

This very rich exhibition returns on the fascinating life of this woman who remained in the shadow of her friends and family, choosing to make those who were dear to her shine rather than becoming a reknown painter herself, despite her talent. Julie Manet devoted her life to shine a light on her family's works of art and this committment can be seen in this incredible and admirable display.

A life of art and love, a taste for sharing enabling us to freely admire some of the most beautiful paintings from the 19th century: Julie Manet gave to the world of art a spectacular legacy the Musée Marmottan Monet made a point of highlighting.
