Can one imagine Pikachu frolicking in the middle of cherry blossoms, or Baby Yoda sailing through Hokusai’s wave? No need to imagine it, Ads Libitum did it! For the record, this young French artist mixes pop culture and traditional art in fun illustrations packed with references. This painter, fascinated by Japanese culture, exhibited in November and December 2021, his “Floating Words” exhibition first at the Galerie Sakura.
And good news, if you have not seen this exhibition: Floating Words is back to the gallery with an even greater and more varied collection of works! 90 illustrations are displayed from September 7 to October 2, 2022, in a free solo show you do not want to miss.
The Japanese etchings – called ukiyo-e, namely “Floating worlds” – are art pieces very famous in the occidental world. They show an ancient vision of Japan, in a very recognizable style. Landscapes of forest, mountain or sea, characters wearing traditional clothing, Japanese houses and folklore scenes: these illustrations show a now-gone era.
And this is where Ads Libitum steps in. The artist enjoys adding modern elements from pop culture to these traditional decors. Video game characters, references to studio Ghibli animes, Japanese animes, popular cartoons such as Scooby-Doo or Ninja Turtles, or even world-famous franchises such as Star Wars and Disney: today’s and yesterday’s Japanese culture is brought together in these artistic and playful mashups.
The Floating Words exhibition is available free of charge. Even better: pieces are on sale! If you fall in love whilst visiting the gallery, you can leave with the picture of your choice; prices start at €35, and increase depending on the size of etchings. And you can treat yourself even on a budget.
On Saturday September 10, do not miss the meet and greet with the artist, from 2 p.m. This will be the occasion to chat with this young pop culture fan and know his universe better.
Will you be able to see all the references Ads Libitum added into his works? Let us meet at the Galerie Sakura this Fall to find out!
