A unique dive into the history of Chinese painting and calligraphy... The Musée Cernuschi invites you to discover its latest exhibition, Peindre hors du monde, Moines et lettrés des dynasties Ming et Qing, from November 5, 2021 to March 6, 2022. Organized jointly with the Hong Kong Museum of Art, the exhibition covers the entire Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1912) periods, inviting lovers of Asian art to contemplate works by the greatest masters of the period.
In all, one hundred masterpieces await the curious, featuring gardens, landscapes and mountains, the preferred subjects of painters from these two dynasties. During theMing era, the landscape genre played a fundamental role in the history of Chinese painting, particularly since the Song dynasty. They are"invested with many meanings, reflecting collective practices as well as the most personal aspirations". Many artists, such as Shen Zhou and Wen Zhengming, present the landscape as"a poetic image of an ideal shared by many scholars of their time".
During theQeng era, it was the mountains that inspired most, seen as a refuge for opponents of the Manchus, who had conquered the empire after the collapse of the Ming dynasty. This was the case, for example, of Shitao and Badashanren, artists and members of the deposed imperial family, who isolated themselves in the mountains by donning monastic garb. A beautiful exhibition, whether you prefer gardens or mountains, to be discovered as a matter of urgency!
