The Japanese warrior, a figure from Asian history as intriguing as it is fantasized... But above all, an imaginary world to which the Musée Guimet is dedicating an exhibition, L'Arc et le Sabre. Imaginaire guerrier du Japon, from March 16 to August 29, 2022. The exhibition focuses on this almost tutelary figure in the history of medieval Japan, placing him in his historical context and revealing the many facets of this warrior and his cultural environment.
Aristocratic culture, a taste for Noh theater, the tea ceremony, poetry... These are just some of the little-known facets of the samurai, unveiled through a hundred or so works comprising prints, weapons and objets d'art. The exhibition also aims to show"the way in which the samurai is perceived, fantasized or parodied", through a series of prints, The Story of the 47 Ronins, housed in the museum.
The exhibition also highlights the use of samurai images in popular culture, through cinema, video games and comic strips. A Star Wars Darth Vader figurine is displayed at the very end of the exhibition, echoing the samurai helmet that inspired the character's outfit, also on display.
Media that illustrate the vision of the soldier in modern Japan and in the West, embodying an identity of the Land of the Rising Sun in the collective imagination. In short, a great exhibition to learn all about samurai!
