The Musée du Quai Branly is devoting an exhibition to the art of the communities settled in the highlands of the Grassfields, in western Cameroon, entitled Sur la Route des Chefferies du Cameroun. From the visible to the invisible, from April 5 to July 17, 2022.

A beautiful journey to the heart of Cameroonian art... This is what the Musée du Quai Branly is offering with its latest exhibition, Sur la route des chefferies du Cameroun. Du visible à l'invisible, from April 5 to July 17, 2022. Visitors are invited to discover the culture of the communities and the preservation of a"unique, historic and living heritage", that of the Grassfields highlands in the west of the country,"carefully guarded for centuries by traditional chiefs".

These quasi-divine figures are the main custodians of this art form, the guarantors of"both tradition and the link between the world of the ancestors and that of the living". Theexhibition showcases this heritage through almost 300 works, including 260 treasures preserved by several chiefs and family lineages. These national treasures are displayed alongsidecontemporary works by Cameroonian artists, linking tradition and the present.

The exhibition also highlights"the cultural influence of chieftaincies on contemporary art and the living dimension of this heritage", at the heart of Bamiléké society. The exhibition is divided into three parts: the first focuses on the typical organization of a Bamiléké chiefdom; the second highlights"the relationship between art and power, through the presentation of the role of the chief as the social, economic and political pillar of the kingdom, the role of women, and that of the many secret societies that act as a counter-power"; and the last part evokes these same secret societies and their role as a counter-power within the community.
