He is at the center of all attentions: Yves Saint Laurent takes over Paris museums! Let us meet the great fashion designer in six museums in town, at the same time! These institutions celebrate the 60th anniversary of Yves Saint Laurent’s very first show, the perfect occasion for an XXL exhibition running from January 29 to May 16, 2022.
The Centre Pompidou explores with this exhibition the obvious modernity of the designer and his relationships with contemporary artists of his era.
At 26 like at 66, Yves Saint Laurent has always been young. The designer was deeply rooted in his time, observing the current trends with one eye, and borrowing inspiration to the different art movements to feed his collections. The designer particularly paid attention to modern artists with who he gladly collaborated.
“I like other painters, but the ones I chose were close to my work, that’s why I asked them. Of course, (Piet) Mondrian was the first I dared to approach; it was in 1965; its rigor seduced me. But also Matisse, Braque, Picasso, Bonnard, Leger. How could I resist the pop art that was the expression of my youth?”, he confessed in “Dialogue avec l’art”.
The Centre Pompidou then unveils the influences and the modern, pop, cubist, abstract inspirations that contributed to the diversity of work, which style was always renewed.
From his very first shows, Yves Saint Laurent managed to influence French fashion. Always renewing himself, he spent his career playing with conventions, shapes, colors, to provide always surprising and innovative collections.
The “Yves Saint Laurent in museums” exhibition is deployed in six major Paris museums, each one of them highlighting an aspect of the designer’s universe and character. Meet at the Centre Pompidou, the Musée national Picasso, the Museum of Modern Art, the Louvre and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum to discover the rest of the exhibition.
