After years of work, the Albert-Kahn departmental museum will finally reopen its doors this Saturday, April 2, 2022! Its inaugural exhibition,"Around the World, crossing images, from Albert Kahn to Curiosity", focuses on representations of travel from the 20th century to today, and takes visitors on an immersive journey, until November 13, 2022.
Albert Kahn, the philanthropic banker who gave his name to the flagship museum in Boulogne-Billancourt, documented his trip around the world between 1908 and 1909. This marked the beginning of the project of visual documentation of the world that the man would make the center of his life. Upon his return from this trip, he set up the Archives of the Planet, the historical core of the museum's collections.
Thetemporary exhibition therefore revisits this foundation, immersing the public in a sensitive journey around the different representations of the figures of the traveler and the journey through photography and film, from 1908 to the present day. 4,000 stereoscopic plates and 2,000 meters of film are on display, recounting the first journey of the philanthropist and his young driver-mechanic, Albert Dutertre, who made these images.
Among the 28 countries visited, the travelers encountered new practices but also new images, never before seen. This exhibition around the world, on a surface of 570m2, allows to imagine Albert Kahn's discoveries, as if we were there, thanks to little-known, even unpublished images, coming from the museum's collections but also from partner institutions.
On the weekend of April 2 and 3, for the reopening of the museum, the temporary and permanent exhibitions are free for all visitors! And until May 5, for every ticket purchased, you will receive a free ticket, thanks to theextended reopening offer. From May 5, you will have to pay 8 euros to discover the whole museum.
