There are many animals, an exceptional ecosystem, a constantly renewed life... It is also the place where druids, spirits, witches, fairies, elves, demons and other mystical creatures have taken up residence. A place that can be as marvelous as it is horrifying, the setting for thousands of stories, and the focus of the new Maif Social Club educational exhibition. From October 1st, 2022 to July 22nd, 2023, we will wander through the Song of the Forests, the new and free exhibition to be discovered in the art place of the Marais.
A dozen artists offer us a walk in the woods, to meet those who live there. From the Amazon to the forest of Broceliande, through the centuries, people and civilizations succeed one another in these forests. A whole life is organized around this ecosystem, which is gradually disappearing today because of environmental disasters and industrial exploitation. The forest becomes a place of struggle, a symbol for the survival of people and the planet. The works of art allow the visitor to become aware, whatever his age.
In the middle of this world of Men live the legends. Threat or refuge, asylum or tomb, the forest can have very different images in the collective imagination. It is also where our imagination can escape and invent new worlds... For artists, the forest is an inexhaustible source of ideas. Fernand Deroussen, Emilie Faïf, Thierry Cohen, Tatiana Wolska, Fibra, Romain Bernini, Félix Blume... All the artists invited by the Maif Social Club were inspired by the forest and came out with a story to tell.
This exhibition takes us into the magical worlds of these creators, thanks to different works that alert all our senses. Photography, sound works composed from sounds captured in nature, marvelous installations and scary sculptures, fairy tale settings, forest smells... All these incredibly diverse works, aided by the immersive scenography, allow us to take a real journey into the forests of the world.
Between the big bad wolf and the effects of deforestation, which reality is scarier? To find out, come to the Maif Social Club, for a walk in the forest full of surprises...
