Between the beginning of the twentieth century and its end, the place, the role and the image of women have changed a lot. Civil rights, body rights, emancipation and independence: in one century, the changes are phenomenal! The Roger-Viollet gallery offers us a look back in images on these 100 years of evolution. From January 26th to April 1st 2023, discover the exhibition A Photographic History of Women in the 20th Century.
The Roger-Viollet gallery unveils more than sixty contemporary photographs, which progressively go from black and white to color.
Throughout the images, we see styles change, bodies are discovered, emotions are released. The emancipation struggles are multiplying: women are freeing themselves from the tutelage of their fathers and husbands, they are fighting to obtain better working conditions and better wages, they are asserting their right to dispose of their bodies as they wish...
They lived through the great wars of this century, took advantage of technological advances, lived through the Roaring Twenties, the rise of rock, the hippie movement... The exhibition also highlights the famous women who have marked this century, the great stars of these times.
Through these photos, the lives and great moments of our great-great-grandmothers, our great-grandmothers, our grandmothers, our mothers are revealed. Four generations of women: that's what it took to allow us, today, to enjoy the rights and freedoms we have. The course of the exhibition offers us a small course of illustrated history: the opportunity for us to remember or discover the great feminist struggles and the key figures of the last century.
The Roger-Viollet gallery pays a beautiful tribute to these women, through numerous fashion photographs, portraits, documentary images that testify as much to the great changes of each decade, as to the banal daily life that these women lived.
Don't miss this beautiful free exhibition to discover at the beginning of the year.
