Politician, man of letters, pioneer of Négritude, Léopold Sédar Senghor is a major figure in French and Senegalese culture. The Musée du Quai Branly - Jacques Chirac presents a portrait of this man with a passion for art, in an exhibition entitled Senghor et les arts - réinventer l'universel, on view from February 7 to November 19, 2023.
Léopold Sédar Senghor led a rich and fascinating life: French minister and deputy, member of theAcadémie française, first president of the Republic of Senegal, poet, writer, defender of Black culture and heritage... He is one of the great figures of decolonization in France.
The exhibition at the Musée du Quai Branly unveils the career, passions, ideals and major achievements of this man whose life was so rich, by presenting various period documents and numerous works of art. The exhibition highlights not only the artist's achievements, but also the politics and diplomatic decisions taken by the politician.
Photographs, paintings, sculptures: the exhibition brings together a wide selection of works by various artists linked to the history of Africa's cultural independence. Videos complete the tour, coupled with an audio reading of Léopold Sédar Senghor's poems.
His speeches on multiculturalism, the meeting and mixing of cultures, universalism, the Négritude movement and the heritage and independence of the Senegalese are discussed: the museum shows both their importance and their limitations, in order to draw a realistic portrait of this man still read throughout the world.
