The very first retrospective in France dedicated to Zanele Muholi is to be discovered in Paris in 2023! Mark your calendars, the MEP, the famous European House of Photography, opens its doors to this talented South African photographer from February 1st to May 21st 2023.
For more than four months, the MEP will unveil the work of this artist and activist, who defines herself as a " visual activist ". Internationally recognized, Zanele Muholi documents the lives of the Black LGBTQIA+ communitý and the individuals who constitute it. In doing so, the artist uses the camera as a tool against injustices in a country deeply marked by apartheid. The advent of democracy in 1994 was followed by the establishment of a new constitution in 1996. At the time, it was the first in the world to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation. However, the violence and prejudice suffered by black LGBTQIA+ people in the country remain numerous.
Through her work, which shows the diversitý and uniquenesś of members of the LGBTQIA+ community, Zanele Muholi invites the viewer to question conventional wisdom.
In recent years, her work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions around the world. In France, Zanele Muholi notably participated in 2016 in the Rencontres d'Arles, in the exhibition"The Other Continent" at the Museum of Le Havre, or in the exhibition"Art/Africa" in 2017 at the Louis Vuitton Foundation. From February 1 to May 21, 2023, the MEP is devoting its first major retrospective to the artist, bringing together for the first time more than 200 works and numerous archival documents. This is an opportunity to discover the full scope of Zanele Muholi 's career to date.
