The period of the French Revolution is a capital, but often troubled chapter of our History. The National Archives try to lift the veil on these years, and to pierce some mysteries, with its new exhibition to be discovered from March 29 to November 6, 2023.
This free exhibition, entitled Louis XVI, Marie-Antoinette and the Revolution. The Royal Family in the Tuileries (1789-1792), traces the daily life of the royal family, from their departure from Versailles, until the abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of the first Republic. To make us relive this period, we can count on a hundred paintings, drawings, documents, letters, engravings and some pieces of furniture of the eighteenth century.
The exhibition at the National Archives is particularly interested in the life of the royal family, how Louis XVI, Marie-Antoinette and their entourage lived these 1000 days. Forced to leave Versailles, the royal family moved to the Tuileries Palace, in the heart of Paris - and its clamour.
The works on display allow us to glimpse the important political tension that shook France and its major players. We discover the fears and hopes of the royal family, the tears of public opinion divided between monarchy and republic... Between the paintings and archival documents, one can admire the exceptional diary of Louis XVI, open to the pages of the years 1791-1792. Other pieces rarely shown to the public are also highlighted, including a portrait of Marie Antoinette or the political manifesto of Louis XVI to the French.
The exhibition also reveals the correspondence between the queen and the Count of Fersen, coded and encrypted letters whose contents are finally revealed!
The National Archives thus invite us to discover an exceptional exhibition on a crucial period, which links the old and new worlds in France.
