Monika Nowak exhibits from May 31 to June 17, 2023 her sensual and urbanized geishas at the Sakura Gallery, in a pop and offbeat tone, but also engaged, around the objectification of this Japanese character.

Faithful to pop culture, the Sakura Gallery welcomes a new exhibition, from May 31 to June 17, 2023, around the Japanese character of the geisha. In the heart of the Marais, we come to discover the works of Monika Nowak, an internationally renowned artist for her colorful and offbeat side. With"Urban Geisha", she represents these sensual women, often sexualized and reduced to a marketing object in movies, books or even tourism, with another point of view.

Thus, the geishas, dressed in traditional outfits and their Japanese flowery headdresses, take on a street-art aspect and are adorned with tags, tattoos and lively colors, to give them back their freedom and give them a more urban look. Monika Nowak denounces the horrors of contemporary society, which imposes a perfect vision of the woman with impeccable plasticity, which has become an object of consumption, like these Japanese ladies-in-waiting, who have marked the collective imagination with their charm.

These refined artists, who dedicate their existence to the practice of traditional Japanese arts, aim to entertain and accompany wealthy clients, highlighted by their beauty. Often reduced to a static role, they come alive here with a very different character, in a solo show whose unique works are to be found in limited edition!
