The Musée de l'Armée pays tribute to the fighters of the Free French Forces, highlighting their often forgotten actions and military campaigns. In this new exhibition, on show from May 23 to September 17, 2023, the museum recounts the Tunisian campaign led by General Leclerc and his soldiers from 1942 to 1943. Come and discover the exhibition Les combats oubliés des Forces Françaises libres : la campagne de Tunisie.
Through some fifteen photographs, objects and archival documents from the collections of the Musée de l'Armée and the Musée de l'Ordre de la Libération, this exhibition retraces the journey of the soldiers sent to Tunisia to retake the Southern Front from the Nazis. Between November 1942 and May 1943, a series of battles pitted the German and Italian Allies against British, French, American and African troops.
Among these soldiers were the Forces Françaises Libres (Free French Forces), made up mainly of military personnel and civilians who chose to fight in a war that already seemed lost.
Under the command of General Leclerc, the FFL fought in Tunisia, in what was to become their last campaign before being integrated into the reconstituted French Army. This final campaign enabled the FFL to distinguish themselves and establish themselves as a valuable force for foreign allies. In particular, the French fighters were able to recapture the Fezzan territory from the Italians, after several weeks of fighting.
The Free French Forces held out against the Germans, again and again, until Tunis was liberated and the invaders finally surrendered. After this victory, the FFL were acclaimed and celebrated alongside their allies.
Don't miss this educational exhibition from the Musée de l'Armée, which should fascinate all history buffs.
