American poet and writer, a major figure in the 20th-century art world, Gertrude Stein is at the heart of the Musée du Luxembourg exhibition. The artist's work and life are retraced through numerous paintings and documents. The museum also highlights her close friendship with the young Pablo Picasso. Come and discover Gertrude Stein and Pablo Picasso, from September 13, 2023 to January 28, 2024.
The exhibition is divided into two parts. The first highlights theinventiveness, originality and work of Stein and Picasso, both pioneers in the art world. Their work provides an overview of the art scene of the time: painting, theater, poetry and music are all evoked in the works of Warhol, Matisse, Duchamp, Nauman, Wilson, Glass... In this way, Gertrude Stein's career is revealed through the works of her fellow artists. We can see her life in Paris, her relationships, her inspirations...
The second part of the exhibition looks at thefriendship between Gertrude Stein and Pablo Picasso. A friendship born of their experiences and passions. These two immigrants, who arrived in Paris in the early 1900s, had a poor command of French and were outsiders to the world. Their differences brought them together.
This relationship nourished the artistic work of both artists. Throughout the exhibition, paintings and texts seem to respond to and enrich each other. The exhibition features 28 works by Picasso, then at the beginning of his Cubist period.
The Musée du Luxembourg also highlights the legacy of Gertrude Stein, still very popular on the other side of the Atlantic. You can admire contemporary creations, portraits and tributes by a number of contemporary artists.
