This autumn,Abbaye de Maubuisson takes on a surrealist hue, with theexhibition Entre les Murs, featuring immersive creations by Dutch artists Tanja Smeets and Karin van Dam. From October 8, 2023 to February 25, 2024, these two figures on the contemporary art scene invite you to reconsider the poetry behind everyday objects and natural structures. Their works, made from found and transformed materials, challenge our perception of the ordinary to create surprising, phantasmagorical environments.
This unique exhibition, which fuses traditional art and reclaimed objects, promises an extraordinary visual adventure. Smeets and van Dam make no distinction between noble and prosaic materials, their art focusing on revealing the poetic power of everyday objects such as wool, fishing line, gutter filters, ceramics, knitwear, rubber, insulation tubing and cable clamps. Their moving installations reveal a harmonious interplay between art and object, nature and culture.
In the historic space ofAbbaye de Maubuisson, each artist offers a unique immersive experience that oscillates between fascination and repulsion. Organic forms undulate from floor to ceiling, creating an atmosphere both strange and familiar. Visitors are invited to lose themselves in these artistic labyrinths, to explore the confines of the imaginary. This exhibition marks a new turning point for the Abbey, after a period devoted to exploring our relationship with death and rebirth, and pays tribute to the history of this place that was once a refuge and creative space for women who found it a place of fulfillment.
Our opinion of the Entre les Murs exhibition at Abbaye de Maubuisson:
An exhibition that the editors were able to discover... The two artists' works are a far cry from the serious subjects usually dealt with in retrospectives at the abbey. Here, the two artists have had fun while taking over the premises, proposing playful in situ works.
Using recycled materials, the works respond to each other in a dialogue that is as unexpected as it is marvellous. Here, the raw materials are sublimated and even highlighted by the two artists, who, from bricks and mortar, imagine an almost mystical universe, underwater, even from another planet.
It's also worth noting that the works can be viewed and listened to, making the experience even more immersive. Some even allow you to breathe between two universes. Note that the exhibition was imagined by t to the women who once inhabited it and to their creative power.
